Because oxygen is produced on relatively short timescales (~10 Myr), this so-called mass-metallicity relation is a sequence of oxygen depletion: low-mass galaxies are metal-depleted relative to the true nucleosynthetic yield rather than massive galaxies being preferentially enriched. Preferential metal-depletion can be caused by either diluting the gas (e.g., via higher accretion rates of pristine gas or by lower star-formation efficiencies) or by preferentially removing metals from low-mass galaxies via galaxy winds. I will use simple analytic arguments to show how the observed mass-metallicity relation implies the required balance between gas dilution and gas outflow. In order to reproduce the mass-metallicity relation in cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations, star formation feedback is required. The resolution of such simulations, however, demands that this feedback is not directly modeled, I will discuss how I am examining and clarifying the issues surrounding different SPH galaxy wind implementations. http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=20905&date=2009-11-03 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT URL;VALUE=URI:http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=21564&date=2009-11-05 DTSTART:20091124T053719 DTEND:20091124T063719 SUMMARY:Lincoln Greenhill, Nov 5 DESCRIPTION:The details of how massive stars form are poorly understood. Testing the viability of disk-mediated accretion, and identifying the processes that extract angular momentum benefit from direct measurement of the dynamics of gas at small radii, where outflows are launched and collimated. Using the VLBA and VLA, and for the first time, we have traced gas structures and tracked 3-D motions within them, 10-1000 AU from a high-mass YSO. We resolve an edge-on disk about 50 AU across and measure its rotation. We also resolve a wide-angle outflow that collimates at radii beyond 100 AU. The implied dynamical mass is about 8 Msun. Close to the disk, curved streamlines suggest that magnetic fields may play a role in launching the outflow. The YSO is quite highly embedded, without known emission up to 20 um. This is consistent with the inferred edge-on disk orientation and high column density. I will discuss possible origins for this disk. http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=21564&date=2009-11-05 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT URL;VALUE=URI:http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=24890&date=2009-11-06 DTSTART:20091124T053719 DTEND:20091124T063719 SUMMARY:Space Sciences Lab Colloquium: Early Results from the South Pole Telescope, Nov 6 DESCRIPTION:Keywords : cosmology:cosmic microwave background - cosmology:observations - galaxies:clusters - Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect, galaxies: high-redshift - galaxies: surveys - submillimeter Abstract : The South Pole Telescope (SPT) is a 10-meter telescope designed to survey the millimeter-wave sky, taking advantage of the exceptional observing conditions at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. The telescope and its ground-breaking 960-element bolometric camera (developed at UCB) were successfully installed at the South Pole in 2007. Since then, SPT has embarked upon a large, three-frequency survey covering more than 5% of the entire sky. The primary science goal of the survey is to constrain the evolution of dark energy through a mass-limited catalogue of hundreds of SZ clusters. However, it will also produce a rich data set for exploring the properties of individual clusters and sub-millimeter galaxies, and for probing small-scale cosmic microwave background anisotropies. Relying on stellar evolution calculations, stellar spectral libraries, and dust models, practitioners of SPS aim to convert the observed spectral energy distributions of galaxies into physical properties. Knowledge of these physical properties, which range from total stellar masses to star formation rates and metallicities, are essential for understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies. The SPS framework thus provides a fundamental link between theory and observations. Despite its importance, a systematic investigation of the uncertainties in SPS is lacking. In this talk I will describe ongoing work exploring and constraining the panoply of uncertainties in SPS, including uncertainties in stellar evolution, dust models, and initial mass functions, amongst others, and their propagation into the derived physical properties of galaxies. http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=20906&date=2009-11-10 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT URL;VALUE=URI:http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=23475&date=2009-11-12 DTSTART:20091124T053719 DTEND:20091124T063719 SUMMARY:Mate Adamkovics, tba, Nov 12 DESCRIPTION: http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=23475&date=2009-11-12 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT URL;VALUE=URI:http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=25142&date=2009-11-13 DTSTART:20091124T053719 DTEND:20091124T063719 SUMMARY:Space Sciences Lab Colloquium: Infrared Imaging and Characterization of Exoplanets: Can we detect Earth-twins on a budget?, Nov 13 DESCRIPTION:Abstract : During the past decade considerable progress has been made developing techniques that can be used to detect and characterize Earth twins in the mid-infrared (7-20 microns). The principal technique is called nulling interferometry, and it was invented by Bracewell in the late 1970's. The nulling technique is an interferometric equivalent of an optical coronagraph. At the present time most of the technological hurdles have been overcome for a space mission to be able to begin Phase A early in the next decade, and it is possible to detect and characterize Earth-twins on a mid-sized strategic mission budget ($600-800 million). I will review progress on this exciting method of planet detection in the context of recent work on the Exoplanet Community Forum and the US Decadal Survey (Astro2010), including biomarkers, technological progress, mission concepts, the theory of these instruments, and a comparison of the discovery space of this technique with others also under consideration. While we know that the galactic baryons must have been accreted from the IGM, we currently have virtually no direct observations of the galaxy assembly process itself. Contrary to the classical picture of galaxy formation in which the accreting gas is shock-heated to the virial temperature of the halo before cooling, recent simulations show that most of the gas is instead accreted in cold streams, with temperatures T ~ 10^4 - 10^5 K. At these temperatures, the accretion streams will radiate primarily in the Ly-alpha line and may be accessible to current observations. I sill present new results combining cosmological hydrodynamical simulations with Ly-alpha luminosities, spectra, and morphologies of the accretion streams. I will discuss whether these streams may have already been detected in the for of extended "Ly-alpha blobs". http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=22955&date=2009-11-16 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT URL;VALUE=URI:http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=19839&date=2009-11-16 DTSTART:20091124T053719 DTEND:20091124T063719 SUMMARY:Tanya Urrutia (IPAC/Caltech): What dust-obscured quasars can tell us about quasar evolution, Nov 16 DESCRIPTION:I will present results on a multiwavelength campaign to identify the nature of dust-reddened Type 1 quasars. These quasars were selected by matching FIRST radio sources, 2MASS point sources and very red optical counterparts with r'-K > 5. Most of these objects have fairly compact radio morphologies and fall into the radio-intermediate regime. The majority also show flat radio spectral indices, different from other Type 1 populations. Hubble ACS imaging of a subsample of these sources showed a very high fraction of interacting and merging systems. I will argue that these quasars appear to be very young, just ignited objects in which dust from the merging galaxies is still settling in. I will also show Spitzer IRS and MIPS data, that show LIRG-like star formation signatures and deep Silicate absorption features, which are unusually among quasars. I will end with emphasis on finding signatures of QSO feedback, especially because at high redshift we find an unusually high raction of Low Ionization Broad Absorption Line (LoBAL) quasars in our samples, implying that the wind in young quasars is most probably responsible for shutting down star formation in the host galaxy. http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=19839&date=2009-11-16 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT URL;VALUE=URI:http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=20907&date=2009-11-17 DTSTART:20091124T053719 DTEND:20091124T063719 SUMMARY:Cosmological Constraints Using Multi-Wavelength Observations of Galaxy Clusters, Nov 17 DESCRIPTION:Galaxy clusters, as the largest peaks in the cosmic density field, play an important role in astrophysics and cosmology. They are remarkable objects: massive, dynamic, and rich in observables. Accurate determination of cluster scaling relations and cosmological parameters such as sigma_8 and omega_m requires large samples of uniformly observed clusters. The SDSS maxBCG catalog is a highly pure and complete optically selected cluster sample, containing ~14,000 rich clusters in the redshift range 0.1 < z < 0.3 from SDSS DR5 imaging data. Through a cross-correlation of the maxBCG catalog with X-ray photon maps from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS), we trace how the average X-ray properties scale with optical richness. Combined with stacked weak lensing observations, we obtain the first constraints on the covariance among cluster richness, X-ray luminosity, and halo mass. After accounting for these systematics, we measure sigma_8 with precision comparable to the current generation of deep X-ray surveys. Finally, I discuss how cross-correlating optical catalogs with X-ray photon mass allows us to create reduced scatter optical richness estimators that are more tightly correlated with halo mass. http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=20907&date=2009-11-17 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT URL;VALUE=URI:http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=25162&date=2009-11-17 DTSTART:20091124T053719 DTEND:20091124T063719 SUMMARY:LGBT Science Reception, Nov 17 DESCRIPTION:For: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender students, faculty, staff, alumni in science, engineering + technology and their partners and allies Presented by: The College of Chemistry with the goal of fostering the well-being and self-respect of LGBT students and eliminating discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=25162&date=2009-11-17 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT URL;VALUE=URI:http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=21565&date=2009-11-19 DTSTART:20091124T053719 DTEND:20091124T063719 SUMMARY:The interaction of photosynthesis with the crust and mantle and the effect of the moon-forming impact on the current Earth, Nov 19 DESCRIPTION:Photosynthesis evolved before 3.8 billion years ago. Rocks of that age include metamorphosed black shales with pyrite showing that sulfur based and iron based photosynthesis existed. A complete carbon cycle existed on land and at sea. The land biota needed FeO to dump oxygen. A consortium with efficient weathering evolved to obtain the FeO from exposed rocks. Weathering in turn led to wide-spread continents with Fe-poor sediments and Fe-poor granites. The presence of these rock types provided selective pressure to vent oxygen directly and the advent of cyanobacteria. The mantle as well as the crust sequesters biological information. The Earth became habitable after the moon-forming impact once its interior was cold enough for carbonate to subduct in very C-rich domains in the upper oceanic crust. This process continues today causing mantle carbon to exist within highly concentrated domains. The chemical and isotopic character of these domains survives subduction and even partial melting of kimberlites and their freezing within the lithosphere. The build up of oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere is evident in U/Th of zircons in kimberlites. Subduction of carbonate 4.26 billion years ago and its emplacement with the continental lithosphere at 3.6 billion years ago is indicated by study of a 1.48 suite of alkalic rocks in India. http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=21565&date=2009-11-19 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT URL;VALUE=URI:http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=25139&date=2009-11-21 DTSTART:20091124T053719 DTEND:20091124T063719 SUMMARY:Maryam Modjaz: Cosmic Fireworks: The Explosive Deaths of Massive Stars, Nov 21 DESCRIPTION:Maryam Modjaz is a Miller Postdoctoral Fellow in Astronomy at UC Berkeley. She works on the explosive deaths of massive stars as supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. The recipient of Harvard University's Fireman Prize for an outstanding PhD dissertation, her work has been featured on National Public Radio, in the Christian Science Monitor, Astronomy Now, and in a feature article in UC Berkeley's "California" magazine. Massive stars die violently. They produce the most powerful explosions in the Universe during their death-throes: supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. Supernovae are brilliant firework displays that become as bright as a billion suns combined, and gamma-ray bursts are monster explosions that launch jets moving nearly at the speed of light and outshining the whole gamma-ray Universe in a few seconds. Both explosions produce and expel heavy elements and an enormous amount of energy, they leave behind fascinating objects like black holes and pulsars, and like beacons they are visible over billions of light years across the vast Universe. How are these types of explosions related? Are they dangerous to life on earth? How may they be vital for life on earth? These are some of the questions Dr. Modjaz will discuss during her breathtaking tour of the most powerful explosions of the Universe. Finally I will discuss what will be required to significantly improve constraints on the properties of dark energy. http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=20908&date=2009-11-24 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT URL;VALUE=URI:http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=22956&date=2009-11-30 DTSTART:20091124T053719 DTEND:20091124T063719 SUMMARY:Fabian Schmidt, tba, Nov 30 DESCRIPTION: http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=22956&date=2009-11-30 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT URL;VALUE=URI:http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=25050&date=2009-11-30 DTSTART:20091124T053719 DTEND:20091124T063719 SUMMARY:Polar Molecules Near Quantum Degeneracy, Nov 30 DESCRIPTION:Ultracold molecules promise new scientific explorations, including novel molecular interactions, quantum chemical reactions, exotic phase transitions, and strongly correlated states of matter. We recently produced a near-quantum degenerate gas of polar molecules in their absolute ground state. With all degrees of freedom under precise control, we have for the first time observed chemical reactions at ultralow temperatures. We control the reaction rates with pure long-range, quantum mechanical effects, achieving state-by-state analysis of reaction dynamics. The long-range and anisotropic nature of the dipolar interaction has also been observed. http://events.berkeley.edu/index.php/calendar/sn/astro.html?event_ID=25050&date=2009-11-30 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
