Local Information

alphabetical listing

ACCOMMODATIONS: Following is a partial list of hotels in the area.  All are convenient to campus and the Berkeley campus "Hill" shuttle to get to Lawrence Hall of Science for the daytime and evening events.

1) The Bancroft Hotel - (510) 549-1000

2) Hotel Durant- (510) 845-8981

3) The Hotel Shattuck Plaza - (510) 845-7300

Note that Berkeley has many more accommodations. Accommodations in San Francisco are another option. The BART (underground) from San Francisco takes roughly ~30 minutes, and it's another 15-20 minutes to catch the campus "Hill" H-shuttle from the Berkeley BART station or the Hearst Mining Circle on campus to the Lawrence Hall of Science.

AIR TRAVEL: The closest airports are San Francisco International (SFO) and Oakland (OAK).

GROUND TRANSPORTATION:Berkeley may be reached by BART ($5-$6; www.bart.gov), by shuttle (www.bayporter.com), and by car ($70 and $50 for a taxi from SFO & OAK, respectively). Rental cars are available at the airports and from locations in Berkeley. However, parking near the UC Berkeley campus and Lawrence Hall of Science  will cost $8 to $15/day depending on where you are parking.

One of the easiest ways to reach Berkeley from either SFO or OAK airports is to ride the BART train. The SFO BART station is located in garage G adjacent to the International Terminal, accessibly by foot or airport shuttle train from the other terminals. From OAK, follow the signs to the AirBart bus stop just outside the airport, and pay $3 for a ride to the Oakland airport BART station. From either OAK or SFO, you should then ride the BART train to Downtown Berkeley station (not "North Berkeley"), costing $3-5. All the conference hotels are within a short walk (< 10 min) of Downtown Berkeley, or there is a taxi stand immediately next to the station exit if you wish to be driven to your hotel (~$5).

DRIVING: Click here for directions to UC Berkeley. Berkeley is one of the few cities in the U.S. where just about everything is accessible by walking or public transit.

INTERNET CONNECTION & POWER: The Lawrence Hall of Science Auditorium has wireless connectivity, but to get it you will have to register your laptop or PDA in advance. The easiest way to register your laptop is to do it when you register for the symposium. On the registration website, there is a field asking for your MAC address and instructions for finding that number on your computer or PDA. Another way to pre-register your computer is to email Barbara Hoversten with the MAC address. This must be done several days prior to the seminar.

Please note that this symposium will be held in a large room, so the availability of power will be limited.

LOCATION: The two day symposium and the Anniversary dinner are being held at the Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS), located just up the hill from the UC Berkeley campus.

MEETING FACILITY: The Lawrence Hall of Science Auditorium will be the main venue for all daytime talks on Thursday and Friday (November 13-14).  The closing evening dinner will also be held there on Friday November 14. The facility is located on the hill just above the UC Berkeley Campus.  There is parking next to it for those that drive, or for those without a car, there are frequent campus shuttles ("H" or Hill line).

PARKING: Click herefor parking information for Lawrence Hall of Science. The LHS parking lots are operated by the University of California parking system-- thus, ALL UC 'F' and 'C' PARKING PERMITS ARE VALID in their lots.

For those people without a valid UC Berkeley parking permit, machines are located in the vista lot, the terrace lots, and near the LHS plaza. Please note that you will need quarters and small bills for the parking machines. Parking is $8 per day. If the parking machines are broken or you do not have correct change, please park and go to inside the Lawrence Hall of Science and let them know-- they will provide change or make sure you are not ticketed for a broken machine.
