Berkeley offers several fellowships for its students to pursue research on campus during the summer and/or academic year. Berkeley also offers travel grants up to $500 for students to travel to collect data or attend a conference. Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP)

The Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program allows students to earn academic credit to work as research assistants for any one of over 150 faculty members. Working closely with faculty, students deepen their knowledge and skills in their area of interest, while experiencing what it means to be part of an intellectual community engaged in research.

Berkeley Physics Undergraduate Research Scholars Program

A program similar to URAP for physics majors, with a small stipend and presentation at the end of the year. Apply at the beginning of the fall or spring semester.

Deadline: September 14, 2007 and February 8, 2008

 

Haas Scholars Program

The Haas Scholars Program provides up to $12,600 in funding for 20 students to carry out a senior thesis or project in any major.
Eligibility: 3.5+ GPA; graduating Fall 2008 or Spring/Summer 2009; eligible for federal need-based financial aid.

Program benefits: close mentoring relationship; close-knit intellectual community; the opportunity to present the research, field-study or
creative project.

UC LEADS

For educationally or financially disadvantaged students (defined pretty broadly) considering advanced degrees in math, science and engineering at any of the UCs, a two-summer research internship program with stipend.

Deadline: January 31, 2008

 

David Scholars Program

Up to $18,500 in project expenses and stipends, for financial aid-eligible students planning to pursue a Ph.D. in the sciences after graduation. Students can apply as sophomores (two years prior to graduation) or juniors (one semester or one year prior to graduation).

Deadline: April 3, 2008

 

Summer Research Opportunity Program

8-week research internship, with room and board covered, plus a $3,000 stipend; GRE prep. Eligibility: educationally or financially disadvantaged students, or students from groups under-represented in graduate education in their discipline.

Deadline: February 1, 2008

 

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

This fellowship provides a stipend of $3,000 to approximately 25 students who wish to carry out full-time research during the summer before their final year, in preparation for a senior research project or thesis. Students present their work at the end of the summer. On-line application available in early February. Information sessions will be held later in the spring.

Eligibility: student in L&S; 3.0+ GPA; Fall 2008 or Spring/Summer 2009 graduation.
