ALMA Observations of Supernova 1987A

Dick McCray (Colorado) - March 4, 2013 at 12:10 pm

In recent (Cycle 0) observations of mm radiation from Supernova 1987A with the ALMA array, we detected emission lines of the 1-0 and 2-1 rotational transitions from CO and the 5-4 transition of SiO in the inner explosion debris. In this seminar I'll give a brief review of our current understanding of the physical conditions in the debris, then explain how we infer the properties of the gas responsible for the CO emission from the ALMA observations. Finally, I'll describe how we plan to map the 3-d structure of the CO- and SiO-emitting regions with the full ALMA array.

The seminar will be held in B-5 Hearst Field Annex.
