IR Images and Movies (from the Lab)

In the lab in Viriginia, we took several scans (48 x 1.3 sec images) in front of the 2MASS camera and saved the results to the native 2MASS data format. As of August 21, Josh ported the C routines to Python, adding more flexibility in the type and names of image extracted from these native files. Using the 2MASS calibration images, we then reduced the images in a manner similar to the reductions in the final automated pipeline. We then combined these images into movies and color pictures, illustrated below.

Josh at Infrared Wavelengths. Blue is J-band, Green is H-band, and Red is K-band. Notice the sources of thermal heat on the skin. Blue light is mostly reflected ambient light. At optical wavelengths, Josh's shirt appears blue, here it appear white. The bad pixel mask in the K-band was not very effective in removing the array defects. A new bad pixel map will be made for all filters during the automation project.

J-, H-, K-band animation of Josh's scan. There are 48 frames and the speed of the animation has been increased otherwise the moving is incredibly boring. Click to get the full resolution GIF animation.
