DESCRIPTION:Exploring the Transient Universe with the Long Wavelength Ar
ray\n\nThe Long Wavelength Array (LWA) would provide mJy sensitivity at\
narcsecond level resolution in the relatively unexplored frequency\nrang
e 20-80 MHz. With a field of view of 3 degrees (at 70 MHz) and\nmillise
cond time resolution this instrument will be uniquely\nwell suited to th
e discovery of transient events. Giant Flares from\nmagnetars\, like th
e recent outburst from SGR1806-20 would be\ndetectable in our Galaxy and
as far away as M31. Enigmatic\nobjects like the recently discovered Ga
lactic Center Radio Transient\nJ1745-2009 could be closely monitored\, a
nd similar sources readily\ndiscovered. In addition to pointed studies\
, the LWA Demonstrator\nstation currently under construction has the cap
ability to do all-sky\ntransient monitoring. This could detect coherent
emission from\nhigh-energy cosmic ray air-showers\, prompt emission ass
 ociated with\nGRBs\, extra-solar planets\, or new phenomena.\n

DESCRIPTION:Transient Sources\, The Southern Sky Survey and the SkyMappe
r Telescope\n\nMt Stromlo Observatory is replacing the Great Melbourne T
elescope\,\ndestroyed in bushfires on the 18th of January\, 2003\, with
the\nSkyMapper Telescope - with an 8sq-degree field of view. This telesc
ope\nwith be equipped with a 268 Million Pixel Camera made up of 32 E2V\
n40micron deep depleted CCDs\, providing 5 square degrees of sky\ncovera
ge with 0.5 arcsecond pixels and a 20 second readout time. The\ninstrume
nt has reasonable throughput from the 320nm-1micron\, and will\nbe dedic
ated 75% to the Southern Sky Survey\, a survey covering the\nentirety of
the southern celestial hemisphere in 6 filters (6 epochs\neach) includi
 ng g\,r\,i\,z\, along with a stromgren u\, and a DDO-38\nfilter. These l
atter two filters will provide gravity and metallicity\ninformation for
more than 100\,000\,000 stars in the survey. Total depth\nof the survey
will be approximately 0.5-1mag deeper than the SDSS\nsurvey\, with indiv
idual epochs approx 0.5 mags less sensitive than the\nSDSS survey. Surve
y is planned to commence at the end of 2006 and\nfinish in 2009. Data wi
ll be made available to the public in as short\nof time as possible.

DESCRIPTION:Photon counting detectors for the visible region\n\nWe prese
nt details of the NSF-funded research program to develop high-time resol
ution photon counting detectors for visible wavelength astronomy being
carried out by the Experimental Astrophysics Group at the Space Science
s Laboratory at UC Berkeley. We will discuss the Medipix image-tube dete
ctor\, currently being developed for adaptive optics applications and a
sub-millisecond sealed tube photon counter based on GaAs to be used for
polarization studies of individual pulsar pulses. Finally we show empiri
cal data from the GALEX mission that outlines the utility of high time r
esolution detectors for recording dMe flares and for tracking space deb
 ris.
