Welcome to Astronomy 10 at the University of California, Berkeley!

In this class we will explore many of the wonders of the universe, learning about the big ideas in astronomy at an introductory level. Using basic physical concepts like gravity and the behavior of light, we will study the formation and evolution of our Sun and other stars, galaxies like and unlike our own, and ultimately how the universe began and how it might end. My goal is that students in this class will leave with an appreciation of our place in the universe and how our own galaxy, sun, and planet came to be, and will understand enough about basic astronomy to be able to critically read popular astronomy articles and news items. The six-week format requires that we move at quite a rapid pace if we are to cover a semester's worth of material. Students are encouraged to attend class, keep up with the reading, and to utilize section and office hours when any questions arise.
