Bio

Mike Wong is a research scientist in the Center for Integrative Planetary Science at UC Berkeley, on sabbatical at ASIAA in Taipei in Spring 2024. He is a Juno Participating Scientist (through SETI Institute) and a Mars Science Laboratory Collaborator (through University of Michigan), specializing in variable atmospheric composition in planetary atmospheres. His work with mass spectrometer data from the Galileo probe launched his interest in cloud-forming gases in Jupiter's atmosphere. He discovered the signature of ammonia ice in Jupiter's thermal spectrum as an NRC postdoc working at NASA with the Cassini CIRS team. In addition to ground-based observations of planetary atmospheres, he identified similarities between the infrared spectra of Jupiter’s rings and its moon Amalthea with Imke de Pater, and discovered the first moonlet binary among the Trojan asteroids with Franck Marchis.

He sequenced observations of Jupiter's atmosphere, rings, and satellites using NIRCam, NIRSpec, MIRI, and NIRISS on the James Webb Space Telescope for the Early Release Science program. He used Hubble Space Telescope observations with the NICMOS, WFPC2, ACS, and WFC3 instruments for projects including the 2006 color change of Oval BA, the 2009 impact on Jupiter, imaging context for the Juno mission, new dark vortices on Neptune, and the OPAL program. The 2009 Jupiter impact data were the first on-orbit science data ever taken with WFC3, an instrument that he helped calibrate at the Space Telescope Science Institute.
