A clump is defined as a high density region that is gravitationally bound but has not reached the density required for hydrogen burning. When the mass of the clump becomes larger than the Jean's mass, 'runaway' gravitational collapse ensues, i.e. a stellar clump forms when the gravitational pressure exceeds the thermal pressure.
The parent clump mass sets an upper limit on the stellar mass, and radiation pressure eventually halts the accretion.
