Astronomy Department Research Project
Project Description
We still don’t understand the physical mechanisms that ‘quench’ galaxies, transforming them from disky blue star-forming galaxies into quiescent red elliptical galaxies. Post-starburst galaxies– whose stellar populations indicate that they just concluded their major episode of star-formation– provide an ideal laboratory to understand quenching. The SQuIGGL⃗ E sample is composed of massive post-starburst galaxies at z∼0.6. We’re collecting a large set of multi-wavelength data, including ALMA measurements of molecular gas, Gemini/GMOS measurements of stellar kinematics, VLA and Keck/NIRES measurements of obscured star formation, and Hubble Space Telescope imaging.
