Mail Services
UC Berkeley Mail Services handles receiving and sorting for all USPS mail with a UC Berkeley destination address. Typically mail (including packages sent through USPS) is delivered to departments the day after receiving.
The Astronomy Department mailing address is:
[Your Name]
Department of Astronomy
501 Campbell Hall, MC# 3411
University of California, Berkeley
Berkeley, CA 94720-3411
The Department mailcode is 3411; this is important to include as Mail Services sorts mail based on mailcodes, thus not having one included in your address results in a significant delay in delivery. Mailboxes are located in 526 Campbell Hall; if you do not have a mailbox please contact Rayna Helgens.
Sending Mail/Packages Through USPS (Off-Campus Destinations)
You can drop-off deliverable mail at the front office (there is as bin labeled “Out-going Mail). Mail is typically picked-up and delivered around 9:30, 10:00 am each morning. Otherwise, there is a general mail-box located on the Southside of Evans (it is visible when you leave Campbell) that has a pick-up time of 3:00 pm.
The department has stamp barcodes for mail related to department-business Once you have everything properly packaged and addressed please come to the front office to receive a stamp barcode.
For help with special deliveries please contact Rayna Helgens.
Sending Mail/Packages through USPS (On-Campus Destinations)
If you are sending mail to an on-campus destination (i.e. another department) please come to the front office to get an Campus envelope; using the yellow campus envelopes allows you to send mail for free.
Receiving Mail/Packages through FedEx, UPS, On-Trac
Packages sent to the department are signed for at the front desk and put in the mailroom. When a package is received you will receive an email letting you know of it’s arrival. There isn’t a standard delivery time for these groups. Please note that due to liability reasons, the department will not accept personal packages.
Please note that packages ordered through RES may take an extra day or two, as they have separate receiving facilities.
Sending Mail/Packages through FedEx, UPS, On-Trac, etc.
If you are sending a package on department business, contact Rayna Helgens for assistance; we cannot assist with personal items. Make sure you have consulted the website for your preferred sender to ensure you have followed proper packing procedures.
There are drop boxes located on the Southside of Evans Hall; pick-up times are typically 3:30 pm. There are size/weight/item restrictions, so make sure you read the boxes before depositing any envelopes/packages for pick-up.
For items that cannot find in the pick-up boxes: Please note that when you are sending through FedEx you must schedule a pick-up. UPS, on the otherhand, will take packages without a scheduled pick-up, however they are not here everyday so time-sensitive materials should have arrangements made.
