Martin White joined Berkeley as a faculty member in 2001. He received his B.Sc. from the University of Adelaide and his PhD in 1992 from Yale and was a postdoctoral fellow at Berkeley and Chicago. Subsequently he served as a faculty member at UIUC and Harvard before joining the Berkeley faculty in Astronomy and Physics.
Prof. White's research interests are in theoretical and computational cosmology, specifically in cosmic microwave background anisotropies and large scale structure of the universe. He works closely with large astronomical surveys and was a founding member of the Planck, BOSS and DESI collaborations.
Specialty Areas: Cosmology
Projects: Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument
The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will obtain optical spectra for tens of millions of galaxies and quasars, constructing a 3D map spanning the nearby universe to 11 billion light years.
